Port of Salalah receives 25 summer trainees in its 10th year 2012-09-02
Port of Salalah has received 25 students from Salalah's universities and colleges as part of its summer internship program in 2012.
The summer internship program was started in 2002 to provide on-job training exposure and experience to the growing population of the Dhofar region's higher education students. Over 150 students have taken part since the start of the port's summer internship program.
The Port offers a comprehensive internship program for students including an induction on the port profile and safety training, courtesy insurance, and a proportional salary for service during the 8-week training among other benefits.
Each department at the port is tasked with challenging the students with an experience that supports learning and career development. Up to 17 students have joined various departments as early as May 20th, while another 8 students were received at departments towards the end of June, according to the end of terms.
Yarub Al Shahri, a student at the College of Applied Sciences in Salalah, said about his experience, "I have added many words to my regular vocabulary now such as stevedoring, supply chain, logistics, transshipment hub, as well as soft skill words like momentum, reputation, transparency and prioritization. My previous information about the port wasn't clear but with the internship I learned a lot and enjoyed seeing how the port administration works as a team and about various communication methods like port visits and reports."
The summer internship program is managed by the Training Department at the port which coordinates with the neighboring educational institutions to set high qualification standards.
There is a strong interest from Dhofar's youth regarding the port's summer internship programme and job prospects according to Hind Hubais, HR Project Manager at the HR Department, who tours university and college job fairs to promote career opportunities at Port of Salalah.
